from foster care to medicine

SAVI MED is an online platform dedicated to helping aspiring doctors

Growing up differently doesn’t have to stop you from applying to medicine.

Hey! I’m Savannah, the founder of this platform! A bit about me…

I grew up in the foster-care system my entire life. Only 6% of care-leavers even make it to university, let alone medicine. I truly believed I’d amount to nothing because that’s what the statistics said, I was discouraged from pursuing medicine and so my path was set back 6 years..

Fast forward to today, I’m a medical student at King’s College London. I’m dedicated to showing others that care-leavers and mature students are not ‘lower calibre’ and can out-perform even the most privileged; we are deserving of a place in medicine. My journey has been arduous, so through this blog, I hope to inspire and support you all with the resources, tips and encouragement you need to succeed.

MY JOURNEY

2016

Life’s Pause

Typically, you study subjects or courses at college that would allow you to progress into university. For me? I chose to study subjects that I loved. I studied Sciences, English Language & Linguistics and Photography - quite a mix! During this time, my personal life was flipped upside-down with the palliative diagnosis of both my parents. I was terrified to re-locate or pursue a degree. Needless to say - college and any form of career decision was put on the back burner at the time.

Gaining Ground

"Sometimes the best journey’s are the ones you never planned”.

I started working as a nursing assistant at my local neurorehabilitation unit and fell in love with it. I enjoyed being able to give back to the community in some small way. I loved the patient interactions, truly making a difference but I realised what I loved the most, was learning - every single day and applying this to transform lives. At the time, a family friend, a Consultant, encouraged me to pursue medicine. For the first time in my life, I felt that growing up in foster care was not the disadvantage my teachers made it out to be. I could be part of the 6% that go to university. From that day forward, the medicine seed was sown.

2018 onwards

Achieving the Dream

I worked as a nursing assistant on the Acute Medical Unit in the NHS. I wanted to have a true insight into the realities of medicine before committing. I worked long, hard shifts in many different wards, gained some clinical skills and gained invaluable experience. Doctors allowed me to shadow them, they gave me bedside teaching and surgeons allowed me to scrub into their surgeries and sit in on their clinics - I loved every second of it. During this time, my mum passed away. I became hyper-aware of the world, that time really is too short. I focused my energy entirely on becoming a doctor. I wanted to prove to myself that care leavers and mature students are deserving of a place in medicine and can even out-perform some of the most privileged students. I later received unconditional offers to some of the UK’s most prestigious universities.

I’m now a medical student at King’s College London.

Paying it Forwards

Through my online platform, I will be sharing my own experiences, resources and knowledge that has helped me through my journey. I’ll also be sharing my achievements and projects along the way to hopefully positively inspire both aspiring and current medical students. I aim to extend the kindness and guidance I’ve received over the years and build a community.
